Accor has signed a management agreement with Orascom Development Egypt to reposition Mövenpick El Gouna as Sofitel El Gouna resort on Egypt’s Red Sea coast.
The property will undergo a phased renovation from 2027 and reopen as a flagship luxury resort, adding to Accor’s luxury presence in Egypt.
The project is developed in collaboration with Orascom Development Egypt and Arabian Peninsula Hospitality.
El Gouna has been developed over the past 36 years and includes lagoons, waterfront districts and a marina.
The destination includes more than 18 hotels, five schools, a hospital, business hubs and over 100 dining concepts.
The Sofitel property will occupy a beachfront peninsula with both sea and lagoon access.
After renovation, the resort will have 420 rooms and suites, food and beverage venues, a spa, fitness centre, outdoor leisure areas, and meeting and event facilities. It is intended to serve both leisure and business travellers on the Red Sea.
The conversion supports Sofitel’s expansion in Egypt, alongside Sofitel Cairo El Gezirah, Sofitel Cairo Downtown Nile with 615 rooms, and Sofitel Legend Giza Pyramids, which is expected in 2028.
Sofitel, Sofitel Legend, MGallery and Emblems CEO Maud Bailly said: “Egypt has always held a special place in Sofitel's story, and today's signing of Sofitel El Gouna Resort represents a new chapter in our journey here.
“El Gouna embodies a rare balance of nature, community and international lifestyle, making it an ideal setting for Sofitel. This project reflects our shared ambition with our partners to create a landmark resort that celebrates both local identity and French elegance.”
Earlier this year, Accor’s luxury hotel brand Fairmont Hotels & Resorts launched its first property in Vietnam with the opening of Fairmont Hanoi.
"Accor signs agreement to transform El Gouna resort as Sofitel" was originally created and published by Hotel Management Network, a GlobalData owned brand.
